We are doing a series of projects for out art class. I chose busts that will be made out of different materials and the busts will have exaggerated features depending on what feature is tied in with said emotion. Here is some conceits from my sketchbook.
First portrait Drawing
This is the very first portrait style drawing I’ve ever attempted. This picture is of my girlfriend and I felt that I should try to draw her because I am familiar to her facial features. I think in my opinion it wasn’t bad at all for a first try. Although, there are some flaws but all in all I think I did well.

My Pastel Still Life
Jon Lee – Artist Statement
This still life is a statement about hidden faces. We wear many masks on different levels. Faces can be concealed not only by a physical object but also on an emotional or mental level. We have a tendency to hide our true selves in the presence of others which is what my piece represents
. This piece captures a mask, a hat that covers the face, and a pair of sunglasses. I used soft pastels to capture the texture of the velvet cloth, the yarn of the hat, the roughness of the mask, and the sleek frame of the shades. My purpose for creating this piece is to expose the reality that we shelter our identities from fear of being judged. In the piece the light hits one side of the mask because we only see the one side of others. The hat is discarded and left to hang because that is what we fear would happen to us if we revealed ourselves. The glasses are left to the light because our eyes are the “windows to our soul” and everyone sees them. Masks can come in several shapes, sizes, and colors. My piece is a testament to this idea and of all the emotional, mental and physical impact hidden behind it all.
Influences
My influence was the painter Emil Nolde and his painting of still life masks. I incorporated his touch of light and set up by placing my mask in a similar angle. Although he used color in his I decided to use black and white for more value.
